What’s the most beautiful avenue in Paris, if not the entire world? The Champs-Elysées of course!

Planning a trip to Paris? Take advantage of the chance to find out more about the famous Champs-Elysées which have inspired so many artists, including French musician Joe Dassin who sang ‘In sun, rain, at noon or midnight, there’s everything you could wish for on the Champs-Elysées‘, in the song named after the celebrated avenue.

Exploring history during your Paris holiday

The avenue des Champs-Elyséess, also known as Champs-Elysées or simply Les Champs, takes its name from Greek mythology, in which the Elysian fields refer to the resting place of the virtuous after death.

The Champs-Elysées were the brainchild in 1616 of Marie de Médicis. But the avenue was only named in 1698, 24 years after it was built. In fact, at the time it was a royal garden – an extension of Jardin des Tuileries (known as the Carré Ledoyen) – which explains the mythological reference. It was in 1833 that it began to take on its modern-day appearance, linking the place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe.

During your holiday in Paris, or a short trip to the capital, make sure you explore the avenue considered to be the most beautiful in the world.
